RAGBRAI Lessons (What's that, you say?) In the last issue, Bob Moleberry talked about lessons he had learned from becoming disabled. Now, he talks about lessons learned from a week-long bike race. I swear it was never my intention to ride the whole thing, the Des Moines Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI). True, I was in really good shape, having just completed a century ride on my Lightning handcycle. I was registered. I had hotel lodging arranged all across the state for the 1,530 mile ride. But I had never felt compelled to ride every brutal mile of it. Until a TV newscaster from Des Moines interviewed me the week before the ride as a human interest feature. "So," she asked innocently, "you're planning to ride every mile this year?" What could I say? The die was cast. The gauntlet lowered. My life had purpose, at least for the next week. "Of course I'm going to do the whole thing." Even if it kills me, I thought. Which, as it turned out, it almost did. But I survived, and even learned some things in the process. This is my story.
